SANTORUM & SPECTER ANNOUNCE $300,000 FOR THE AUGUST WILSON CENTER FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE IN PITTSBURGH
|
|
Washington, D.C. - Senator Rick Santorum, Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, and Senator Arlen Specter, a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced today $300,000 in federal funding for a new August Wilson Center for African American Culture to highlight the contributions of African Americans in the region.
The new facility, projected to open in downtown Pittsburgh in early 2008, will feature art galleries, a 500-seat theater and multi-purpose spaces for community use.
The funding was secured in appropriations bills currently moving through the Senate: $200,000 in the Fiscal Year 2007 Senate Transportation, Treasury and Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill and $100,000 in the Fiscal Year 2007 Senate Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations bill. Additionally, Senator Santorum secured $100,000 for this project in the Fiscal Year 2005 Omnibus Appropriations bill.
The August Wilson Center for African American Culture is a not-for-profit organization
that presents performing arts, visual arts and education programs that celebrate the contributions of African Americans within the region.
The August Wilson Center is currently engaged in a capital campaign to raise $35.9 million for the new facility.
