SENATOR SPECTER COMMENTS ON THE DELAWARE RIVER DEEPENING PROJECT
|
|
Washington, D.C. - Senator Arlen Specter, the Senior Senator from Pennsylvania, made the following statement today regarding the Delaware River Deepening Project:
“It is unconscionable, really scandalous, for New Jersey governmental officials to continue to hold up dredging of the Delaware River main channel from 40 to 45 feet. This issue goes back to 1991 when Senator Heinz and I succeeded in getting Congressional authorization for the deepening of the Delaware River. Since that time, Senator Santorum and I, together with the Pennsylvania and New Jersey Congressional delegations, have been successful in securing appropriations in excess of $66 million to enable the Corps of Engineers to deepen the Port.
“This deepening is indispensable if the Delaware Valley region is to be able to compete with other deep-water ports. Thousands of jobs and billions of dollars are at stake in this project.
“I join Governor Rendell and Senator Santorum in asking Governor-elect Corzine to exercise leadership to get New Jersey’s agreement to get the Delaware River Port Authority to approve the dredging funding before December 31st. This project has now been delayed too long by politics to the detriment of the economic development of the region resulting in economic losses to Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.”
