Presentation of Distinguished Flying Cross

Tech Sgt. David Nagel

Rep. Bill Pascrell

January 22, 2002

There are many aspects of my job as a Member of Congress. We vote. We debate. We give speeches on any number of issues. All of that is important as a Representative, and I am honored to have this job.

But of all the things that I have the privilege to do, few compare to what I have the great fortune to be able to do today.

Tech. Sgt. David Nagel of Clifton is an American hero, and, as a veteran myself, I don’t use that word very often.

During the period of June 10, 1944 to January 27, 1945, Sgt. Nagel completed 35 missions against the enemy. He did so under the most hazardous of conditions – and he did so always exemplifying the very best of his nation.

You know – we are at war again today. And today, men and women a little younger than Sgt. Nagel and I will be putting their lives on the line for America – just like he did 57 years ago.

Many of today’s generation do not yet understand what is required to protect our values, our freedoms, and our families.

I say they need look no further than this man standing here.

Sgt. Nagel has waited years to receive a decoration that he earned through his service to our nation in World War II.

He has waited years to receive his Distinguished Flying Cross. And it is my honor and privilege to have helped his receive it – and to present it to him today.

The Distinguished Flying Cross is the 8th highest decoration one can receive. Higher than the Bronze Star. Higher even than the Purple Heart.

It is presented to those who have distinguished themselves through their airmanship and their courage.

Sgt. Nagel, on behalf of a most grateful nation, I am honored to present to you your Distinguished Flying Cross.
