Michaud Announces Funding for Assistance to Victims of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Mike Michaud announced that the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women has awarded $450,000 in funding through the Legal Assistance for Victims Grant Program to Pine Tree Legal Assistance in Portland, Maine.  The Office on Violence Against Women has also awarded two grants of $83,041 each to the Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault in Augusta and to the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence in Bangor.

“This funding will go a long way in promoting services for victims of domestic violence in Maine,” said Michaud. “The Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence, the Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and Pine Tree Legal Assistance do important work throughout our state and are leaders in their field.”

The Legal Assistance for Victims Grant Program supports projects that provide legal services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.  The Office on Violence Against Women funds projects that provide comprehensive legal services either through direct representation or through advocacy aimed at making the victims of violence safer and strengthening their economic security.

“I am pleased that the Department of Justice has recognized the good work being done in Maine to aid victims,” said Michaud. “With the support of these grants, Maine’s Coalitions against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault will be able to continue their efforts in coordinating victim services within the state, as well as with other federal, state, and local entities”
