DETROIT, August 31, 2006 — U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Carl Levin (D-MI) today announced an agreement with Ontario officials to stop shipments of municipally-managed solid waste to Michigan over the next four years. Under the terms of the Stabenow-Levin agreement, there will be an immediate 20 percent reduction of Canadian trash within the first year, a 40 percent reduction within two years and a complete end to these shipments within four years. On February 14, 2006, Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) introduced the Heart Disease Education, Analysis and Research, and Treatment (HEART) for Women Act. This bill would improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of heart disease and stroke among women. Read
Helping Michigan Families Save Early for College
Over the past decade, college tuition and fees increased by 51 percent at 4-year public colleges and universities and by 36 percent at private ones. The average community college tuition and fees have increased faster than the rate of inflation. Senator Stabenow understands the financial crisis facing families as they prepare to send their children to college and achieve the American dream. Stabenow Introduces Trade Prosecutor Bill
The Stabenow-Graham legislation is a bipartisan
bill that creates a Chief Trade Prosecutor within the Office
of the U.S. Trade Representative. The Trade Prosecutor would
be given the authority to investigate illegal trade practices
and recommend the prosecution of cases before the World Trade
Organization. The Prosecutor would be able to stand up to our
trading partners and make sure they are playing by the rules
to protect manufacturers and farmers against unfair trade practices. Read
