SENATORS SPECTER & SANTORUM ANNOUNCE FUNDING FOR WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA FIRE COMPANIES

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA), a member of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, and U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, announced today that the Department of Homeland Security has approved funding for several fire companies in western Pennsylvania.

“Ensuring that Pennsylvania’s first responders get the support they need from the federal government is one of the most important things I do as a United States Senator,” said Senator Santorum. “This funding will help to provide the knowledge and skills necessary for our firefighters to better protect Pennsylvania families from fire and fire-related hazards.”

“Our Pennsylvania firefighters risk their lives every day to ensure the safety of millions of people,” Senator Specter said. “This grant will help assure their protection as they safeguard our communities. I commend the Department of Homeland Security for recognizing this priority and for its continued support of the nation’s fire services.”

These grants are the first round of funding from the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of State and Local Government Coordination and Preparedness (SLGCP) and the United States Fire Administration’s Assistance to Firefighter Grant Program.

This program is designed to provide an opportunity for the U.S. Congress and SLGCP to enhance fire service in locations across the country by providing funding for firefighting operations, firefighter safety, EMS delivery, vehicle purchase, and prevention programs.

The following western Pennsylvania companies were approved for funding:

• $641,250 for Leechburg Volunteer Fire Company in Armstrong County;

• $270,750 for Fayette City Volunteer Fire Company in Fayette County;

• $122,550 for Whitney-Hostetter Volunteer Fire Department in Westmoreland County;

• $121,482 for Richhill Township Volunteer Fire Company in Greene County;

• $116,684 for Whitehall Fire Company in Allegheny County;

• $112,647 for Hartford Heights Volunteer Fire Department in Westmoreland County;

• $107,350 for Lloydsville Volunteer Fire Department in Westmoreland County;

• $70,297 for Sewickley Township Volunteer Fire Company Number 3 in Westmoreland County;

• $70,015 for Sarver Volunteer Fire Company in Butler County;

• $61,000 for Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department, Hose Company No. 8 in Westmoreland County;

• $53,937 for Unity Volunteer Fire Department in Allegheny County;

• $51,553 for West Deer Number 1 in Allegheny County;

• $ 43,510 for Homestead Volunteer Fire Company in Allegheny County;

• $36,184 for Ross/West View Emergency Medical Services Authority in Allegheny County;

• $32,632 for Newell Volunteer Fire Company in Fayette County;

• $26,040 for Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Department in Washington County;

• $23,465 for Greenwood Village Volunteer Fire Department in Butler County;

• $20,348 for Murrysville Medic One in Westmoreland County;

• $10,450 for Herman Volunteer Fire Company in Butler County.
