Since taking office in January of 1997, one of my top priorities has been to communicate with you about what is happening in Washington and how it affects life in the Garden State. To this end, I have held numerous "town hall meetings" and "forums" in both Essex and Passaic counties. Often I am joined by representatives from various federal agencies to answer questions and present practical information to those in attendance.
In addition to general town meetings where we discuss a broad range of topics, I regularly host issue-specific events throughout our district. Such events have included:
- Free glaucoma screening event in West Orange;
- Our firefighter FIRE grant writing seminar;
- Our minority business forum in Paterson;
- Our prescription drug discussion with seniors in Wayne, Nutley, Clifton, Montclair and Passaic;
Often, however, people cannot get to our events or offices in either Paterson, Bloomfield, or Passaic. To reach these constituents, I instituted a "mobile office" program, where each month we bring our office to the community and help address issues of concern. Up an running since early 1997, our "mobile office" program brings the services of the federal government directly to people in their hometowns. Click here to see the monthly schedule.
We are planning a host of events for 2006. To receive information and reminders of these events I encourage you to sign up for my e-newsletter and to check this page often for updates.

Fire Grant Training Program

Since 2001 the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program has awarded over $2 billion in one-year grants directly to fire departments to support the nation's firefighters and the services they deliver. For 2005, Congress has appropriated another $650 million in assistance to improve the effectiveness of firefighting operations, firefighter health and safety programs, and to establish or expand fire prevention programs throughout the United States. In addition to these objectives, this year’s grant eligibility has been extended to include nonaffiliated emergency medical service squads to assist them in their crucial endeavors.
Indeed, these grants represent a major effort by the Federal government to ensure that those on our frontlines continue to have the basic capability they require to do their jobs, improve their safety and save lives. In the Eighth Congressional alone, departments have received almost $3 million in funding from this program, and we hope to see this success continue.
