Operation Hero Miles

Troops arriving home from Iraq for leave first arrive at Baltimore-Washington International Airport in Baltimore, MD. Upon their arrival, they must pay, out of their own pockets, for their airfare for a connecting flight home. For soldiers on the West coast, the fare can reach more than $1,000. Operation Hero Miles will help alleviate the financial burden for these soldiers who wish to spend much needed time with their families.

Operation Hero Miles asks airlines to set up a pool through which frequent flier miles can be donated to assist soldiers in their journey home. Delta Airlines, Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air, Pan Am Boston-Maine Airways, and Southwest Airlines have all announced their participation in this program.

While Congress has earmarked $55 million to pay for leave travel, the funds will not be available for several weeks. More than 470 troops arrive home for leave each day and must still pay for their own domestic travel.

"I am pleased to lend my support for this program. Our brave men and women are risking their lives for our country, yet, when they receive well earned leave time, they must pay out of their own pocket to travel to and from Baltimore," said Congressman Michaud.

The Congressman also issued the following caution:

Please do not flood the military mail system with letters, cards and gifts. Due to security concerns and transportation constraints, the Department cannot accept items to be mailed to "any service member." Some people have tried to avoid this prohibition by sending large numbers of packages to an individual service member's address, which however well intentioned, clogs the mail and causes unnecessary delays.
