Base Closures

On May, 13, 2005, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld released the Pentagon's recommendations for Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC). The BRAC report recommended closing the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, and the Defense Finance and Accounting Service Center in Limestone, as well as realigning Naval Air Station Brunswick, which would result in a reduction by half of operations.

"I cannot stress enough the importance of these facilities to the entire state of Maine and to our overall national defense, these facilities are critical to our country’s security and to our state’s economy, and I will continue to do everything I can to see that they are protected."

The Defense Department's report now goes to an independent BRAC Commission for review and possible changes.
