As a
member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, I have
worked to strengthen markets for South Dakota’s ten
ethanol facilities and increase production of soy-based biodiesel
by promoting a renewable fuels standard (RFS)
which will effectively double our nation’s use of ethanol.
We
need energy policies that will not only decrease our dependence
on fossil fuels, but will also create new markets and industries
in South Dakota. A cornerstone to a balanced energy policy
is to encourage alternative sources of energy, such as wind energy
generation and geothermal energy projects in South Dakota and nationwide.

and the renewable fuels standard.

Senator
Johnson joined with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator
Stephen Johnson and Representative Stephanie Herseth to discuss
the bright future for Ethanol at the South Dakota Corn Growers Association
meeting in Sioux Falls. Johnson is an avid supporter of Ethanol
and helped secure a robust 7.5 billion gallon Renewable Fuel Standard
(RFS) in the Energy Bill.
Senator
Johnson met with East River Electric Power Cooperative officials
in Madison to get an update and discuss the impact of the November
2005 winter storm. The storm caused significant damage to a large
portion of the state and left more than 50,000 people without power.
Employees of the electric cooperatives have been working overtime
and then some to restore power across the state.
