VETERANS' DAY 2006
Veterans Day is observed each year as a way to honor and commend the brave women and men who have served our nation at its most difficult times. Throughout the history of our nation, members of our armed services have fought and died to defend us.
This year, as we observe Veterans Day, there is a special need to address the problems faced by our veterans. Increasingly, young men and women are returning from combat with wounds, both physical and mental, that will impact them for the remainder of their lives. Our nation cannot – must not – allow their needs to go unmet.
I am working in the U.S. Senate to ensure that service members are mentally and physically fit for duty, that they have the equipment and services they need to do their jobs, and that they receive the medical attention and counseling they need both during their service and after their discharge. This cannot be thought of as a benefit of service but rather as an obligation that we have to those who go and fight for us.
It has been said, “In war, there are no unwounded soldiers.” As we watch world events unfold, this quote continues to ring true. When you see a veteran, I hope you will go out of your way to shake their hand, give them a word of encouragement, and tell them that you appreciate their service.

Barbara Boxer
