House Armed Services Committee

Congressman Meek serves on the powerful House Armed Services Committee, the largest authorizing committee in Congress, which is responsible for the nation's entire $393 billion defense budget. It has jurisdiction over military installations and facilities in this country and abroad, personnel, procurement, military research and development and readiness issues. The committee also has special oversight responsibilities over international arms control and disarmament and the education of military dependents.

There are 15 major military bases in Florida, which employ more than 114,000 Floridians. Defense-related activities pump more than $30 billion into the state annually, making the defense industry one of the most important contributors to Florida’s economy.

South Florida military bases include Homestead Air Reserve Base in Dade County, which was realigned after Hurricane Andrew into a joint use military-civilian base and is currently home to the 482nd Fighter Wing; the U.S. Southern Command in Miami, which is responsible for all U.S. military activities in the Caribbean and Central and South America, as well as counterdrug activites in the region; and the U.S. Naval Air Facility at Boca Chica Key.

In addition, the subcommittee will be responsible for all Navy and Marine Corps aviation programs, National Guard and Army and Air Force reserve modernization, and ammunition programs.

Readiness Subcommittee
