Dreier Hails Approval of Iraqi Constitution
October 25, 2005
WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, congratulated the Iraqi people today following the official announcement that the new constitution was approved in a nationwide referendum earlier this month. He also praised the continuing efforts of our men and women in uniform to help the Iraqi people make the transition from tyranny to democracy. He issued the following statement:
"Passage of this constitution is a vital step in Iraq’s transition to a better, freer, more secure future. The people of Iraq turned out in record numbers for the chance to vote in a free and fair election. And thanks to the efforts of the Iraqi Security Forces, violence was down significantly this time, when compared to the January elections. This is a clear demonstration of progress. Now, the country is focused on the next election in December. Again, this is a tremendous achievement.
"Of course, none of this would have been possible without the heroic efforts of our men and women in uniform. Over the past two years, hundreds of thousands of soldiers, airmen, Marines, and sailors have contributed in countless ways to laying the foundation for a brighter future in Iraq. Many have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Their family and friends remain in our thoughts and prayers. While we mourn every single death, we also honor their sacrifice by continuing the mission for which they gave their lives. With the passage of this constitution, we have a clear measure of their success. They have the support of millions of Americans and the thanks of a grateful Iraqi people."
