Dreier Applauds Passage of U.S.-Oman Free Trade Agreement

July 20, 2006

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas,CA), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, applauded today’s bipartisan House approval, 221-205, of H.R. 5684, The U.S.-Oman Free Trade Agreement. Dreier said the agreement with Oman, a staunch ally in the Global War on Terror, will promote economic and political opportunity in the Middle East.

"Against a backdrop of growing violence and unrest in the Middle East, what could be more important to our interests than to solidify our relationship with a moderate Arab Middle Eastern ally? As we face the challenge of dealing with those who favor terror and violence over the rule of law, it is absolutely essential that we reinforce the institutions that form the foundation of free markets and responsible governance. The U.S.-Oman Free Trade Agreement offers an important opportunity to expand our relationship with a country in the region that is stable and moderate, and has willingly chosen to pursue a path of liberalization.

"Furthermore, by helping to solidify the principles of economic freedom in Oman, we have the opportunity to help solidify their foundation for political freedom. By extending free trade, we strengthen the rule of law, increase transparency, and combat corruption. In addition, we spur economic growth, which improves standards of living and provides the resources necessary to support the institutions of political and economic liberty. In this post-September 11, world, we know that our greatest tool in combating terrorism is the spread of democracy and political freedoms. With Oman, we have a partner who has not only been a reliable ally for over two decades. Passage of this agreement rewards and reinforces this commitment to liberalization from an ally in the part of the world where the voice of reform is often drowned out by agents of intolerance and murder."
