Dreier: Economic Momentum Continues

June 2, 2006

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, said today’s announcement from the Department of Labor that unemployment is down to 4.6 percent and 75,000 new jobs were created in May proves that Republican policies have produced a steady, growing economy that is creating good paying jobs and helping reduce the deficit at the same time.

“With unemployment at its lowest rate in 5 years, the evidence is clear: the GOP policy of tax relief has yielded positive results for the American people. The investment tax cuts just recently extended by the GOP Congress and signed by the President have helped fuel this growth. Extending them was the absolute right thing to do, as they have helped companies across the country create the professional and business service jobs that are leading this job creation. What’s more, because of this strong economy, federal revenues are up and the deficit is coming down.

“When combined with recent reports of a GDP growth rate of 5.3 percent, today’s news makes clear the momentum created by tax relief is continuing. As Democrats continue to clamor for tax increases that would stifle this strong, sustained growth, Republicans remain committed to pursuing policies that will continue reducing the deficit and help Americans earn a better paycheck and keep more of it.”
