Dreier Statement on President’s Border Security and Immigration Speech
May 15, 2006
WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, issued the following statement tonight in reaction to President Bush’s speech on border security and immigration reform:
“In his speech tonight, President Bush rightly put the emphasis on border security first. Following the lead of House Republicans, he has proposed a dramatic increase in the border patrol, something that is urgently needed. What’s more, he has asked for the funding to do so immediately. This request demonstrates the real sense of urgency about the crisis on our border. Hard, immediate action is needed.
“The President’s call for real interior enforcement and employer accountability through a tamper-proof card is also welcome. I have long advocated the use of such a card to confront the problem of lax workplace enforcement. Any end product must follow this approach - fewer documents, easier verification, tougher enforcement.
“As the Senate debate continues, I will watch carefully to see what the end product will be. I voted NO on amnesty in 1986 and I will do so again. Amnesty must be off the table in any conference between the House and Senate.”
