Dreier to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

May 3, 2002

COVINA, CA – Calling our relationship with Mexico “key to the tremendous cultural, economic, and historical dynamic in Southern California,” Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas) announced today that he would be commemorating Cinco de Mayo with fellow Californians and community leaders in Rancho Cucamonga tomorrow, May 4th.

“Cinco de Mayo is a great day to celebrate the many contributions Mexican-Americans have made to our everyday lives,” Dreier said. “It’s also an important chance to recognize the importance of freedom and liberty, as the people of Mexico defended themselves and won back on Cinco de Mayo, 1862. As we find ourselves waging a war to promote freedom across the globe today, it’s important we honor those who have fought for it in the past.”

Dreier pointed to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) as a prime example of how a successful Mexican economy can benefit the American economy, as well as breed positive political change. “Since the implementation of NAFTA in 1994, we have seen expanded economic growth on both sides of the border and a huge increase in the Mexican middle class. A strong relationship is more than important, it’s essential to the economic and homeland security of both partners. I look forward to continuing to work with President’s Bush and Fox to strengthen it even further.”
