Dreier Votes to Increase Energy
Independence and Create Jobs

April 11, 2003

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, voted today to approve H.R. 6, the Energy Tax Policy Act of 2003, legislation aimed at decreasing our dependence on foreign energy sources and improving the efficiency and environmental effects of energy production and consumption here at home. The legislation passed with strong bipartisan support, 247-145.

"A reliable energy supply is key to many things, chief among them economic and national security," Dreier said. "With the right approach, this country can produce more energy here at home and do it in a way that is less harmful to the environment and better on our pocket books. Passage of this legislation is a critical step in forming a sound national energy policy that will provide important benefits for many years to come."

The Energy Tax Policy Act of 2003 will:

  • Strengthen our national security by reducing dependence on foreign energy sources;
  • Increase funding for programs to help low-income residents cover high energy costs;
  • Promote a cleaner environment using renewable energy and alternative fueled vehicles;
  • Modernize electricity infrastructure and protect consumers from unfair prices;
  • Provide private sector incentives to improve efficiency standards on electric products;
  • Improve regulation of nuclear and hydroelectric power; and,
  • Promote clean coal technologies.

Dreier noted that while U.S. energy consumption is at an all time high, U.S. energy production is declining. While energy prices are high and projected to remain unstable, world events continue to threaten our energy supply and weaken our economy. He said he was glad Congress acted now to send the economy a signal that we are committed to securing a safe, clean, reliable energy supply for American consumers and businesses. "A comprehensive energy policy will go a long way toward getting the economy back on track," he said. "I hope the Senate acts soon and we are able to get this package to the President for his signature."
