Dreier Welcomes Rumsfeld to Rules Committee

February 28, 2002

WASHINGTON - House Rules Committee Chairman David Dreier (R-CA) welcomed Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld to a meeting today with Rules Committee Republicans. Rumsfeld met with the members over breakfast to discuss progress in the war on terror and other topics.

Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld"Secretary Rumsfeld and the rest of the War Cabinet have demonstrated tremendous leadership for America since September 11th," Dreier said. "They have kept us focused on the task at hand, while not letting us forget why we are in a war to defeat global terror. As the Secretary reminded us once again this morning, our task is far from complete. Much remains to be done, and America will not rest until we have brought an end to those who would terrorize the world."

The discussion with Secretary Rumsfeld ranged from Operation Enduring Freedom to his efforts to overhaul the military to the upcoming budget process. Dreier noted that Rumsfeld's efforts to upgrade the military to an even more effective, efficient force will be key to our long term effort to defeat global terror.

"We've seen what our military can do in Afghanistan," said Dreier. "With many more challenges ahead of us, we need to be sure our military has the resources necessary to protect and defend the American homeland and freedom abroad. Under Secretary Rumsfeld's leadership, I have no doubt that we will be victorious in the end."
