Dreier Statement on President’s 2007 Budget Proposal

February 6, 2006

WASHINGTON, DC- Congressman David Dreier (R-CA), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, said today he believes President Bush’s 2007 budget proposal would allow Congress to build on last year's economic momentum by maintaining pro-growth policies and fiscal restraint.

"As the 2007 budget process begins, the President has submitted a proposal that demonstrates a commitment to the policies that will continue to fuel our economic expansion, keep our homeland safe, and rein in federal spending. The 2001 and 2003 tax relief unleashed the economy, and by making tax relief permanent, we will create more jobs and a better quality of life for all Americans. With increased funding for defense and border security, we will remain on the offense in the Global War on Terror and get control of illegal immigration. While there will be tough decisions as this process moves forward, particularly with the looming crisis in mandatory spending, I am confident Congress will be able to reduce the deficit while funding priorities that will keep the country safe and prosperous."

The 2007 Budget includes significant funds for border security, including $446.7 million for 6,700 new detention beds, 560 new detention officers and agents, and 18 new Fugitive Operations teams. In addition, the Budget includes $41.7 million to increase workplace enforcement efforts and $38.5 million for 257 immigration attorneys to process detained aliens. "Funding for 1,500 new border patrol agents, more technology and tighter enforcement along the border is essential for national security. I am also pleased that the President is providing the resources to bring to an end the dangerous 'catch and release' policy. I am disappointed, however, that the budget proposal does not fund the SCAAP program. I will work aggressively with my colleagues to ensure this vital program receives the funding that our local law enforcement needs."

The President's 2007 Budget also reflects the important role that the La Canada Flintridge-based Jet Propulsion Laboratory plays in advancing space exploration. The 2007 Budget highlights the importance of two JPL-managed missions: the Space Interferometry Mission and the Mars Science Laboratory. "That JPL's mission ranks high among NASA's priorities is important and appropriate. As the appropriations process moves forward, I will work to ensure that NASA's priorities - and JPL's - are met."
