DREIER SECURES $2 MILLION FOR CAL POLY ROAD REPAIRS

January 4, 2002

WASHINGTON - Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas) announced today that Congress had officially approved $2 million for road repairs at the California State Polytechnic University. The funding was included in the Department of Transportation Appropriations Act Conference Report, H.R. 2299, which passed the House last November and was signed into law by the President in December.

“I’m very pleased to have been able to work with local elected officials and the people at Cal Poly to obtain this critical funding,” said Dreier, who chairs the House Rules Committee. “Working together with Assemblymen Pacheco and others, we were able to get the funding necessary to begin an important road repair project on campus. The funding will be key to maintaining quality transportation for the students, faculty, and staff of Cal Poly.”

The $2 million contained in H.R. 2299 will be used by the University to begin a long term project, repairing the campus’ most heavily traveled roads. Without the funding, the University would not have had the resources necessary to undertake the project. This in turn would have forced them to severely diminish campus bus service, restricting access to students and community residents who depend on the campus bus system for transportation to and from campus.

Cal Poly Pomona President Bob H. Suzuki thanked Dreier for his work on the funding. “Congressman Dreier's hard work and leadership have been essential in helping Cal Poly Pomona begin to repair the essential roads on our campus," said Suzuki. "The acquisition of these resources is an important first step, enabling us to identify a strategic plan to support the transit community's long-term needs.”

Dreier noted that because Cal Poly does such great work and is such a tremendous educational resource, all residents should be able to take advantage of its presence in their community. “Continued bus service will help more people do just that,” Dreier said.
