 Texas Teachers and Social Security
H.R. 743, the Social Security Protection Act of 2003, was passed by both the House and Senate and was signed into law by the President on March 2, 2004.

I am a cosponsor of H.R. 1714, the Public Servant Retirement Protection Act of 2005.  This bill amends the Social Security Act to repeal the current WEP.  WEP reduces the Social Security benefits of workers who also have pension benefits from employment not covered by Social Security.  H.R. 1714, establishes a new formula for the treatment of non-covered earnings in determining Social Security benefits and applies the new formula to individuals subject to the current WEP if the benefits under the new formula would be higher.

The following links provide information and explanations for those affected by the Government Pension Offset and the Windfall Elimination Provisions of Social Security.

Common Questions and Answers on H.R. 743

 Immigration and Border Security
No nation can protect its residents without knowing who is entering and why.  Thousands of people continue to cross our borders illegally every day, instead of playing by the rules and coming into the country the right way.

 Immigration and Border Security

Legal immigration has made this country great.  Our hearts go out to those who want to come to America.  We are the freest, most prosperous country in the world.  It’s no surprise that America welcomes more legal immigrants than all other countries combined.

We will continue to welcome legal immigrants, but no nation can survive without secure borders.

Illegal immigration threatens our homeland security, the stability of the economy, and the rule of law.  Those who come to work illegally depress wages and use government benefits at the expense of U.S. taxpayers.  And foreign worker programs only attract more illegal immigrants.

No nation can protect its residents without knowing who is entering and why.  Thousands of people continue to cross our borders illegally every day, instead of playing by the rules and coming into the country the right way.

Immigration is an emotional, sensitive, complex subject.  But Americans - citizens and legal immigrants alike - have every right to secure borders and a safe homeland.
