U.S. Rep. Kendrick B. Meek Honors America’s Veterans

Washington, DCToday U.S. Rep. Kendrick B. Meek issued the following statement in commemoration of Veterans Day, this Saturday, November 11th 2006:

“This Veterans Day, we honor the more than 24 million veterans, brave men and women who have served our country in uniform.  Our nation owes a debt of gratitude to the soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coastguardsmen who defend America in peacetime and wartime.  Throughout history, these selfless men and women have brought dignity to the uniform they wear, and honor to this nation they so proudly defend.

“Again this year, this nation is at war.  We honor the newest generation of veterans who have served so honorably in Afghanistan and Iraq, despite the most challenging of circumstances and hardships.

“More than 100 of our troops were killed in Iraq last month alone, but more than 21,200 have returned from Iraq wounded, many of them permanently.  Yet this Congress and this Administration have not provided proper funding for the VA health care system at exactly the time when both older vets and newer vets need greater access to medical services.  Since January 2003, the VA has locked out more than 270,000 veterans from the VA heath care system.  That’s not the way to support our troops.

“So this Veterans Day, let’s all remember that caring for those who bore the brunt of war, and their families, is our moral obligation, a solemn promise and responsibility that must not go unfulfilled.

Congressman Kendrick B. Meek currently serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Committee on Homeland Security and represents the 17th Congressional District of Florida which covers parts of Miami-Dade and Broward County.
