Meek Ranked Among Best In Florida On Environmental Protection

Scores a 92% from League of Conservation Voters

Washington, DC – Congressman Kendrick B. Meek received a 92 percent pro-environment vote ranking—one of the best in Florida—from the League of Conservation Voters (LCV), a national, non-partisan environmental group.

The 2006 national average was 48 percent for all House members, and only 39 percent for the Florida congressional delegation.

“I consider each vote on its merit without regard to how any particular group will view my vote or how it will fit into their rankings,” Meek said, “but I believe environmental protection has to be one of our highest priorities.”

“Every drop of water that we need to sustain our way of life in Dade and Broward Counties comes out of the ground.  We have a lot of very special plants and animals in our state, and we are blessed for the most part with healthy air.  We have a huge stake in doing as much as we can in safeguarding our environment.”

Included in this year’s LCV raking are votes to maintain the moratorium against offshore oil drilling; prohibit drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge; oppose shortcutting environmental regulations for new refineries; and support for easing the burden of energy costs to low-income families.

Meek received a score of 89 percent in 2005 and 90 percent in 2004.

The LCV is an independent environmental advocacy organization that rates Members of Congress each year on a scale of 0–100, based upon key votes on legislation.

The National Environmental Scorecard has been published every year since 1970 following the first Earth Day and reflects the consensus opinions of over 20 respected environmental and conservation organizations analyzing Members’ votes on energy, environmental health and safety protections, resource conservation, and spending for environmental programs.

Rep. Meek represents the 17th Congressional District, which includes parts of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.
