Science & Technology

As the 21st century continues to unfold, Americans are inventing a New Economy. Yesterday's industrial order is giving way to a more complex, dynamic and dispersed economy shaped by information technologies, global markets and new communications networks like the Internet, PDAs, and wireless devices. From the way we educate our children and organize our workplaces to how we improve our health, defend our international interest, and clean up the environment, these forces are transforming our society.

As the nation's information technology sectors continue to grow, it is clear that America can expect improved productivity, better consumer products–like I-Pods–and new jobs. These innovative industries give America a competitive advantage in the international marketplace and keep the economy growing.

As home to many of the nation's premier high-tech companies, Southern California is well-positioned to serve as a global center for new technology research and development in the 21st century.

With the remarkable growth of the Internet and the hi-tech sector in general, Congressman Dreier believes that the federal government should adopt policies which encourage, not hinder additional development. Through his work to encourage economic growth, Congressman Dreier has worked to pass legislation that prevents the government from taxing the Internet, as well as legislation that encourages the deployment of broadband technologies.

As technology continues to expand, privacy becomes an even more important issue. Whether banking online or viewing health insurance information, technology will continue to touch many aspects of our private lives. Congressman Dreier is aware of this important issue and is committed to ensuring the federal government takes the needed steps to protect the privacy of individuals. For example, Congressman Dreier helped pass legislation to protect users of the Internet from unknowingly transmitting their personally identifiable information through so-called "spyware" programs. He has also worked to pass legislation to make it a criminal offense to intentionally impair the security protections of a computer, and legislation to prohibit unfair or deceptive behavior such as key-stroke logging, computer hijacking, phishing, and the display of advertisements that cannot be closed.

Congressman Dreier also believes that the federal government should allow the private sector to provide businesses with the most up to date and secure computer systems, including promoting the development of advanced encryption software, which protects the privacy of transactions on the Internet. It is in the best interest of businesses to cultivate an environment in which consumers and customers feel comfortable about the security of their personal information.

In recognition of his commitment to the hi-tech industry, Congressman Dreier has been recognized by countless organizations, including Business Week as one of Congress’ "Digital Dozen," the Business Software Alliance as a "Cyber-Champion," and the Information Technology Industry Council as the "High Tech Legislator of the Year."

In addition, Congressman Dreier continues to be the lead advocate in Congress for the Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL). Based in La Canada Flintridge, California, JPL is the world’s leading center for unmanned space exploration. Congressman Dreier recognizes this and fights for full funding of JPL’s cutting-edge projects and technologies. Over the past several years JPL has overseen a wide array of successes like the Mars Rover landings, which are now operating at three times their design life, the Spitzer Telescope operating flawlessly and the Cassini orbiter insertion around Saturn and Genesis. Most recently, Deep Impact’s successful collision with a comet on Independence Day in 2005 will help us answer basic questions about the formation of our solar system. Congressman Dreier believes that science and space research continues to provide valuable insight into the development of life on earth, and encouragement for our nation’s youth to study math and science. Additionally, we enjoy the benefits of many commercial 'spinoffs' from science in our everyday lives, including the Global Positioning System and videoconferencing.
