Service Academy Nominations

Thank you for expressing interest in attending one of the United States Military Academies. By contacting my office, you have taken the first step towards a future of tough challenges and great rewards. Our United States Military Academies will push you to reach your full potential, both mentally and physically, while giving you the education and skills needed to serve your country as a professional officer. I commend you for your interest in this opportunity.

Applicants should begin the nomination process in the summer before their senior year of high school. To start the application process you should contact the academies you would like to attend and ask them to start a pre-candidate file for you. You should then contact my office in addition to Senator Murray’s office and your Congressional Representative’s office and request a nomination.

The admission process for Military Academies is extremely competitive and my evaluation takes several factors into account. I look for applicants displaying leadership, academic achievement, athletic ability, and strength of character. Successful past nominees have demonstrated these traits through involvement in their communities, while also distinguishing themselves scholastically. Your initiation of the nomination process has placed you among excellent company and I look forward to reviewing your application.

Nomination Application Process:

First, please complete the online Senate Academy Nominations form here so that we have you on file in our system. Create a new account on the right-hand side of the page, and follow the prompts to enter your personal data and other necessary information. Submit the completed application when you have finished all of the sections. (Remember to bookmark the site so you can re-visit it periodically, in order to view your individual applicant checklist and keep track of which parts of your application have been received. This will notify you if some part of your application is incomplete and requires further action on your part.)

Next, send all of your materials to my Seattle office, to the attention of Lee Lambert. The following items should be submitted together in the same package:

A completed Application from my website (sent in hard copy form, different from the online Senate Academy Nominations form you will have completed by this time).
A sealed, certified copy of your High School Transcript.
Three Letters of Recommendation, including at least one from your high school Counselor or Principal (please send no more than three letters).
Official SAT/ACT scores.
A List of Activities.
An Essay on One of the following three Questions:

a. What does a career of military service mean to you? What experiences in your life have motivated your interest in the military?

b. How have hardships or challenges you have faced in your life influenced your decision to apply to a military Academy? What have you learned from these experiences?

c. What does being a leader mean to you and what are some qualities you think a leader ought to possess? What experiences in your life have shaped your understanding about leadership and motivated you to be a leader?

This essay should only be one page single-spaced using 12-point font. Please indicate which essay you are answering.

7. Photo (optional).
