Opening Statement Delivered at Transportation Committee Investigation of Prudhoe Bay Oil Spill

The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced on Friday that Federal Housing Administration (FHA) Mortgage Insurance Premiums will not be raised in response to overwhelming Congressional opposition to the proposed rule. The HUD proposal would have imposed a 71 percent fee increase on a wide range of FHA affordable multi-family housing and health care mortgage programs. In a letter sent to HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson on July 26, 2006, Congresswoman Carson joined 110 of her House colleagues in calling upon HUD to withdraw the proposal. The Congresswoman said in response to the announcement, “The withdrawal of this proposal represents a victory for affordable housing advocates. Our goal should always be to make home ownership a reality for as many Americans as possible, and this proposal would have disadvantaged many low-income households in their efforts to achieve that.”
