Gillmor first recipient of SAFENOWPROJECT Leadership Award

WASHINGTON, DC- The SAFENOWPROJECT recently presented Rep. Paul Gillmor (R- Tiffin) with its first-ever Leadership Award for his work on sex offender legislation in both the 108th and 109th Congresses.

Congressman Paul E. Gillmor (R-Tiffin) accepts the 2006 Leadership Award from Margaret Bullens, Founder and Executive Director of the SAFENOWPROJECT.In awarding Gillmor the 2006 Leadership Award, Margaret Bullens, the Founder and Executive Director of the SAFENOWPROJECT called Rep. Gillmor, “one of our country’s leading congressional child advocates.” Congressman Gillmor was praised by Bullens for several of his efforts over the past two years including:

  • His efforts to create and improve the national sex offender registry;
  • Support of increased efficiency, accuracy and access by law enforcement to the sex offender registry;
  • His creation of the Safe Now Act of 2006 to study the effectiveness of a risk-based classification system for the sex offender registry; and
  • The signing of the Adam Walsh Act into law.

The mission of the SAFENOWPROJECT is to create, promote and advocate community-based strategies and resources to eliminate child sexual abuse. Bullens thanked Congressman Gillmor for his commitment to their mission and his “balanced approach to the complex issues and concerns surrounding child sexual abuse prevention.” She told Gillmor, “you are truly making a difference.”

“This is truly a great honor to receive an award from the SAFENOWPROJECT. This organization was very helpful to me as I continued to push for passage of my bills to create a national sex offender database and a risk-based sex offender classification system. And I am proud to say that the signing of these bills and other provisions in the Adam Walsh Act into law helps protect our communities from further tragedies at the hands of sex offenders,” Gillmor said. “Congress and the President have worked hard to ensure uniformity and open communication across America to combat sexual violence and I am proud of the work we have accomplished to protect our neighborhoods this year,” Gillmor concluded.
