WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement today praising the service of Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL):

"Speaker Hastert stepped into the role of Speaker with the unanimous support and confidence of his colleagues and his country. He has led the House through some great times and difficult ones, all with a steady hand of leadership and commitment to principle that deserves everyone’s respect and admiration. He is a man of unquestioned honor and integrity.

"I have great respect for the remarkable leadership he has exhibited during his tenure as our Speaker. As a friend and mentor, Speaker Hastert deserves tremendous credit for Republicans’ accomplishments on behalf of the American people over the last eight years. He spearheaded legislative success on many key issues important to the American people, whether it is tax relief for working families, a more secure retirement for American seniors, and a stronger, safer America in a post-9/11 world. His service in leadership will be remembered not only for his long list of legislative achievements, but also as a historic figure who is now the longest-serving Republican Speaker in the House."
