'Secure Fence Act of 2006' Signed into Law

King (NY), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, took part in President Bush’s signing of the Secure Fence Act of 2006 at the White House. King was a sponsor of the legislation which passed Congress in September.

McCaul Releases Report on Border Violence

Michael McCaul (TX), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security Subcommittee on Investigations, released a report on border violence in the Southwest. The report examines the alarming rise in the level of criminal cartel activity, including drug and human smuggling, along the Texas-Mexico border and its effects on Federal, State and local law enforcement agencies. The report also looks at what steps are being taken to counter the threat, and the significance of these issues pertaining to the overall security of the United States.

'SAFE Port Act' Signed into Law

Safe Port Law(Monday, October 16, 2006) On Friday, U.S. Rep. Peter T. King (NY), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security and with U.S. Rep. Dan Lungren (CA), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic Security, Infrastructure Protection, and Cybersecurity, took part in President Bush’s signing of the Security and Accountability for Every ‘SAFE’ Port Act.

The legislation, which was introduced by Rep. Dan Lungren (CA), passed the House and Senate on September 29. Specifically, the ‘SAFE Port Act’ takes steps to enhance port security, authorizing $400 million per year for port security grants nationwide, fully authorizing and codifying the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO), and requiring the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to deploy nuclear and radiological detection systems to cover 98% of all incoming cargo.

King (NY), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, announced the release of the Committee’s report on post-9/11 funding to New York City. The report cites instances of waste, fraud, and abuse from the $20 billion in federal assistance sent to New York following September 11, 2001, but also highlights the efforts made by local agencies and authorities to put the proper protections in place.
