Low-income parents and students across America have new hope and new education choices as a result of the No Child Left Behind Act, which provides extra help to both struggling schools and the students attending those schools.  Children in schools consistently identified as needing improvement may qualify for free private tutoring and/or the right to attend a better, safer public school or charter school.

High School Reform Must be Driven by States & Local Communities, Governors Tell Congress

Washington, D.C. (May 17, 2005) Testifying today before the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce, two prominent governors said strengthening high school education is a national priority, but one best accomplished at the state and local level.  Governors Mitt Romney (R) of Massachusetts and Tom Vilsack (D) of Iowa testified on efforts underway in their own states to reform high schools, as well as multi-state initiatives aimed at improving secondary education while maintaining state control.  Read more...

 

Underachieving School Districts Shouldn't be Eligible to Offer Federally-Funded Tutoring, Boehner Says

Washington, D.C. (April 26, 2005) – Witnesses testifying before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce today urged the federal government to maintain high expectations for tutoring providers that are offering federally-funded supplemental educational services to children under the bipartisan No Child Left Behind Act.  Committee Chairman John Boehner (R-OH) said ensuring federal tutoring funds are spent responsibly should start with ensuring underachieving school districts are not eligible for those funds.  Read more...
