Rep. Capito: Defense Appropriations Bill Will Help Protect Our Troops

WASHINGTON - Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) today praised the passage of the conference report for the Department of Defense Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2007 (H.R. 5631), which was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives late last night, saying the measure will fund critical defense needs such as new technologies to help protect our troops from roadside bombs and a pay raise for our soldiers.

"One of my top priorities is to help provide our men and women with the tools and safety equipment they need to win the war on terror and keep our nation secure," said Rep. Capito.  "Along with providing important funding for updated equipment and improved technology to help protect our troops from roadside bombs, this legislation also provides for a well-deserved pay raise so our troops are better able to provide for their families while they serve to protect our country."

Among other things, the conference report to H.R. 5631, provides the following:

*Full funding for the 2.2 percent military pay raise;

*$2.4 billion to replenish National Guard and Reserve equipment

*$1.9 billion for new improvised explosive device (IED, or roadside bomb) countermeasures  to protect our troops on the ground;

*Nearly $23 billion to ensure Army and Marine Corps troops are fully equipped with updated and refurbished equipment;

*$9.4 billion for ballistic missile defense;

*$1.5 billion for the Chemical and Biological Defense Program.
