Academy Nominations

I am pleased to learn of your interest in seeking a nomination to one of the United States Service Academies. The privilege of nominating candidates to the Academies is one of the most enjoyable responsibilities of serving as a Member of Congress.

There are five service academies in the United States that offer young men and women a free college education at a highly-ranked, nationally-recognized academic institution while preparing them for an officer`s commission in the armed forces. All except for the Coast Guard Academy require a congressional nomination for admission. For information on how you may get a nomination or questions regarding the process, please contact Tim Freeman in my Columbia, MO office at (573) 449-5111.

Nomination and Appointment Information

To be considered for admission to a service academy, an applicant must have a nomination through either a congressional office or directly from serving in the military. Applicants who meet eligibility requirements may apply for and receive nominations from either category. Nominees will be selected using the competitive nomination process. This method allows increased competition between the candidates and offers an equal chance for all qualified applicants. To assist in selecting the most qualified candidates, I have formed an academy screening committee to interview each applicant and review his or her application package. Interviews will be conducted in December of each year. In the following weeks, final selections will be made and the candidates will be announced.

Basic Eligibility Requirements

As per the requirements of the military academies, candidates must meet the following requirements as of July 1st of the year of admission:

  • Must be at least 17 years of age, but not have passed one`s 22nd birthday.
  • Must be a United States citizen.
  • Must be a legal resident of Missouri Ninth Congressional District.
  • Must be unmarried, not pregnant, and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents.

General Admission Standards

For consideration, each applicant must submit the following materials no later than the November 1 prior to the year of admission:

  • A completed application form. Call my Columbia, MO office at (573) 449-5111 to obtain an application form.
  • Three letters of recommendation from any of the following: a teacher, principal, counselor, community leader, or someone else who knows the student. No additional letters are necessary.
  • Attach a recent photo to the application form.
  • An essay describing why the applicant wants to attend a military academy and serve as a commissioned officer (included on the application).
  • SAT and/or ACT scores. Additional scores can be submitted until the selection committee meets to select final nominees. Scores should be sent directly to my Columbia, MO office.
