WASHINGTON—U.S. Representative Candice Miller today hailed the passage of a bill that will help keep schools nationwide safe and drug-free. The legislation, known as the Students and Teachers Safety Act of 2006, is part of the Republican Suburban Agenda; an agenda aimed at addressing the needs of America’s growing suburbs. Rep. Miller is a member of the House Suburban Caucus which is responsible for crafting and promoting the family-oriented legislative initiatives.

The bill passed today allows for states, local education agencies, and school districts to conduct a search of a student on public grounds by a full-time teacher or school official if there is reasonable suspicion. This will help ensure that schools will remain free of all weapons, other dangerous materials, or illegal narcotics.

“I fully support any legislation that grants teachers the discretion to take whatever action they see fit to protect their classrooms from students carrying drugs and weapons,” Rep. Miller said. “Our focus should always be on protecting those who want to learn and removing those who disrupt our schools. No parent should ever have to worry about their child’s safety at school.”
