WASHINGTON—U.S. Representative Candice Miller hailed the passage in the U.S. House of Representatives of H.R.4844, the Federal Election Integrity Act, which will ensure that only U.S. citizens showing photo identification will be able to vote in federal elections. The bill authorizes funding for states to provide IDs to those who may not be able to afford a requisite driver’s license or state ID card to ensure that every citizen has the opportunity to vote.

“As former Secretary of State of Michigan and Chief Elections Officer, I have always been committed to our elections process,” Rep. Miller said. “This legislation gives election officials the tools they need to maintain integrity in the system by ensuring that only those who are in our country legally can participate in our electoral process.”

“This is by no means a partisan bill. The bipartisan Carter-Baker Commission on Electoral Reform—led by former President Jimmy Carter—has recommended that we require photo id to be presented at the polling place to ensure the integrity of our election,” Rep. Miller continued. “And after the 2005 Detroit mayoral race, Freeman Hendrix, who lost that close race, declared that Michigan must require a photo id to be shown to fight against fraud.”

“I truly believe that enhancing the integrity of the process will be an impetus to showing people that their vote counts. And if citizens become more confident in the system and know that their vote truly makes a difference, then the more likely they are to come out and participate on election day.”
