Social Security The Social Security Act was signed into law in 1935 and for more than 65 years the Social Security system has enabled millions of retired and disabled Americans, along with the widows and children of deceased workers, to live with dignity, security, and independence. President Bush declared early in 2005 that the Social Security system was in a “state of crisis,” and that revamping the Social Security system was his top priority. These and subsequent announcements and proposals have created intense discussion in Washington and all across the State of Maryland. What follows is some information designed to assist you in better understanding the Social Security program and to clarify the questions involved in the current debate, as well as recent statements and other documents outlining my concerns about the issues under discussion.
