Rep. Gohmert Reacts to Signing of
Terrorist Tribunal Bill

– U.S. Representative Louie Gohmert (TX-01) today issued the following statement following President Bush signing into law the Military Commissions Act of 2006. The bill previously passed the House of Representatives 253-168.
“Five years ago, on September 10th, America did not know we were at war. The next day, September 11, 2001, we learned the hard way that we were. This Terrorist Tribunal Act will create a new judicial system to fairly prosecute the terrorists while still protecting our troops that are continuing to fight the War on Terror,”
said Gohmert. “These judicial tribunals afford enemy combatants more rights than any foreign nation has ever afforded U.S. soldiers. At the same time, it allows our soldiers to concentrate on winning battles and protecting themselves rather than constantly worrying about collecting forensic evidence in the midst of battle conditions.”
“Though my prior commitments in east Texas did not allow my presence, it was an honor for the White House to invite me to the bill signing today. According to the White House legislative staff, the President was most appreciative of my procedural move that allowed the bill to pass out of our Judiciary Committee to the floor for the final vote. As a former Army JAG officer, civilian judge and chief justice, it was an honor to participate in the passage of this important, historic bill. The President’s signature on the Military Commissions Act this morning is proof of a nation that upholds its obligations to international treaties while being consistent with our own U.S. laws.”
