Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee calls on President Bush to order the resignation of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld

Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has failed at his duty to oversee and direct the actions of our nation’s Armed Forces.

Washington DC – Today, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee called on President Bush to demand the resignation of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. Rep. Jackson Lee stated, “In my opinion there has been a dereliction of duty on the part of Secretary Rumsfeld and as Commander-in-Chief I believe you [President Bush] have an obligation to the American people to remove him from office. It has become clear to me and many of my colleagues in Congress that his continued leadership and management of the war in Iraq is no longer in the best interest of our nation.”

Representative Jackson Lee continued, “As Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld has failed at his duty to protect our nation. Secretary Rumsfeld’s shortcomings as Secretary of Defense go far beyond the recent revelations of the torture of Iraqi POWs. Secretary Rumsfeld’s prewar planning showed a complete lack of understanding of the full scope of the endeavor. Throughout the conflict he has continued this irresponsible leadership through constant mistakes, mismanagement, and misguidance. Secretary Rumsfeld has yet to devise a clear strategy for winning the war and installing a successful Democracy in Iraq. Instead he has implemented a policy of one failure after another. What this nation needs is a clear strategy for winning the war through the internationalization of the post war reconstruction. Secretary Rumsfeld has proved he is incapable of achieving that goal.

She concluded, “The torture of POWs in our prison camps is a heinous and unjustifiable act. We must take every action to bring those responsible for these horrific actions to justice. Secretary Rumsfeld’s failure to prevent these occurrences, and attempt to cover them up, is simply dumbfounding. As justification for the war, the administration toted Saddam Hussein’s terrible human rights record. By using this justification for the war while at the same time committing human rights atrocities we are displaying nothing but hypocrisy. It is in my opinion that this is no way to win the war on terror. Through Secretary Rumsfeld’s actions our position in Iraq and in the war on terror has been substantially weakened. Secretary Rumsfeld has been nothing but a detriment to the security of our nation and he must be removed from office.”
