 Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee questions a witness

 

Homeland Security: Congresswoman Jackson Lee has been working hard as a senior member of the Homeland Security Committee to oversee and improve the Department of Homeland Security and to make America safe from terrorism. She pushed legislation to improve the ability of the Immigration and Naturalization Services to keep out dangerous individuals, while continuing to facilitate access for those individuals desiring legalization.

 

NASA: Congresswoman Jackson Lee feels that the space ex-ploration and research done at NASA will inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers, and will provide the technological advances to keep America’s economy strong. She recently sponsored an amendment that passed unanimously in the Science Committee, to encourage NASA to improve the safety of our nation’s network of communication and information gathering satellites.

 

Afghanistan: She believes that America should not turn its back on Afghanistan at a time when it is still unstable. She recently visited Afghanistan and was particularly moved by the conditions of displaced women and children. Congresswoman Jackson Lee will work to get educational resources for the children of Afghanistan.

 

Pakistan: She believes that America should continues its support for Pakistan, a steadfast ally in the global war on terror. She recently visited Pakistan and met with President Musharraf and is working with the Housle leadership to extend an invitation to President Musharraf to address a joint session of Congress. She is a founder and co-chair of the House Pakistan Caucus. In July 2006 she delivered the keynote address at the Association of Pakistani Physicians of North America (APPNA). 

 

India: She strongly supports India, the world's largest democracy, and believes the United States must continue its close ties with this important country. She recently met with Prime Minister Singh to discuss issues of mutual cooperation.

 

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita: Congresswoman Jackson Lee has worked tirelessly on behalf of the thousands of persons displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. She successfully secured federal funding for housing and is working to secure funding to reimburse local governments for increased law enforcement costs.

 

Social Security: Congresswoman Jackson Lee believes that Social Security should be staunchly protected. On behalf of all the families in America who work hard and pay into the system so that they can count on the assistance of Social Security when they retire, the Congresswoman is fighting the Republican plan to privatize Social Security. She recently joined the House Democratic Caucus in signing a discharge petition calling for a debate on preserving Social Security.

 

Voting and Civil Rights: Congresswoman Jackson Lee played a leading role in securing the renewal and 25 year reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act.

 

Guantanamo Bay: Congresswoman Jackson Lee recently toured the facilities at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba where the Al-Qaida detainees are held. Congresswoman Jackson Lee inspected the facilities of the detainees and reviewed the quality of life for the soldiers guarding them. Congresswoman Jackson Lee met with several soldiers including those from the Texas Army National Guard as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

 

Veterans’ Legislation: Congresswoman Jackson Lee recognizes the importance of veterans to the United States. She has sponsored legislation that will benefit veterans and their families. She provides assistance on issues concerning veterans, such as health care, disability compensation, GI bill education and job training, home loan guarantees and life insurance policies.

 

Prescription Drugs: Congresswoman Jackson Lee is committed to providing a Medicare prescription drug benefit to seniors and the disabled. She supports a plan that guarantees that all Medicare patients can afford the medicines their doctors prescribe. She fought the Republican plan that is supported by insurance companies and drug companies. She will continue to fight for the right kind of benefits for our seniors.
