Statement from Congressman Doc Hastings on New Terrorist Tribunal Law
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Doc Hastings issued the following statement today after President Bush signed the Military Commissions Act into law. The law preserves our nation’s ability to interrogate and detain suspected terrorists, and authorizes the military tribunals necessary to bring them to justice. The framework for the military tribunals is based on rules from previous military commissions and the Uniform Code of Military Justice, and conforms with the Geneva Conventions.
“Sitting back and waiting for the terrorists to attack America again is simply not an option. We need to fight terrorists abroad, so we don’t have to fight them here at home. Accomplishing this means providing law enforcement, intelligence personnel and our troops with the tools and resources they need to protect us – and that’s exactly what this law does.”
