Method of Selection:
If you would like Congresswoman Lee to consider you for a Congressional Military Academy nomination, please contact Tim Cromartie of our Oakland office during the year prior to the year you would like to enroll.  I will nominate an unranked slate of ten nominees for each fall vacancy I have at the various Military Academies.

These nominees will be evaluated by one of the Academy Admissions boards, which will closely examine all aspects of each individual I have nominated.  The nominees will be ranked in order of merit.  The most highly qualified for an appointment will be selected to fill the vacancy.  Other nominees will also be evaluated for appointment.  Most Academy appointments are offered prior to the end of April.

U.S. Merchant Marine Academy admissions are handled differently.  A Member of Congress may nominate candidates to this Academy.  However, candidates compete statewide for the vacancies and selection is made by the Merchant Marine Academy.

The Coast Guard Academy manages its own selection process.  There are no Congressional nominations.  All applicants must apply directly to:

Director of Admissions
U.S. Coast Guard
New London, Connecticut 06320

Competition Requirements:

Potential nominees are judged on three factors:
a.  Academies: Grade point average, SAT scores, and class rank.

b.  Leadership experience and ability:  Applicant must submit a brief statement of extracurricular activities.  Examples should include work, church, school government, and youth or civic organizations.

c.  Motivation and writing skills:  Acceptance into an Academy is a highly desired goal.  To gauge each applicants determination and goals, an essay of 500 words must be submitted on the topic of "Why I want to attend the Academy."

Please download and complete the Academy Application Data Sheet and return it to my District Office.  At the bottom of the form, please number Academy choices in order of preference.

Nominations are made in January, shortly after we conduct personal interviews.  To be considered as a candidate, applicants must send their data sheets, SAT scores, high school transcripts, statement of activities, and their written essays by December 1st of the year before you would like to enroll in the Academy.  There will be no exceptions to the December 1st deadline.  It would be wise to submit applications earlier than the December 1st deadline.

In addition, each student should contact their High School/College Counselors to assist in applying for admission to the academies while being considered for nomination by my office.  For further information please contact Tim Cromartie in our Oakland District Office.
