Frelinghuysen Celebrates 75 Years of Department of Veterans Affairs

Today, Rep. Frelinghuysen joined with veteran members of Congress and Secretary R. James Nicholson of the Department of Veterans Affairs to participate in a ceremony closing the year-long celebration of the Department s 75th anniversary.

Frelinghuysen said, "The Department of Veterans Affairs has a long and distinguished history of serving those who have served our nation. I am delighted to join with the dedicated staff of the Department to celebrate their 75 years of caring for our veterans and their families."

The Veterans Administration was established on July 21, 1930, by President Herbert Hoover. Currently, the Department has 156 hospitals, nearly 900 clinics, and 237,000 employees who care for veterans in about 55 million annual outpatient visits and 600,000 hospitalizations. The Department also maintains 123 national cemeteries and 55 regional benefits offices. In New Jersey, the VA operates medical centers in Lyons and East Orange, as well as a community based outpatient clinic in Morristown.
