Congressman Dent honors Veterans’ Day

U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent (PA-15) made the following statement in honor of Veterans’ Day:

“Today, November 11, we honor Veterans’ Day. This commemoration began in 1919 as Armistice Day, when the world celebrated the end of a devastating conflict we now call the First World War. People at the time said we had fought the ‘War to End All Wars.’ Sadly, history has proven that wasn’t the case.

In the eighty-seven years since the first Armistice Day, American soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen have been called to arms in at least five major wars and a host of smaller conflicts. They have mobilized on every inhabited continent, and they have sailed every ocean.

They have fought to defend freedom against despotic empires, they have fought to help allies in faraway places, and they have done it with pride, dignity and amazing resolve.

On this day we honor all who served, in war and in peace. In those precious years when the battlefields lay silent, it is because some have sacrificed all for their country, and because the men and women of our Armed Forces stand ready at all times to do so again.

In the 1950s, Congress formally changed the name of Armistice Day to Veterans’ Day. It is appropriate that this day should be for reserved in their honor. Peace and freedom are bought with the service and sacrifice of our Veterans. My eternal gratitude goes to those who serve.”
