Congressman Dent comments on Secretary Rumsfeld’s announced resignation

U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent (PA-15) issued the following statement on the decision by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to resign:

“Secretary Rumsfeld’s decision to resign is the right thing to do. In the coming weeks, the Iraq Study Group commissioned by Congress and led by James A. Baker and Lee Hamilton will issue its report, and I will carefully weigh and consider its recommendations. Whatever course we follow in Iraq, it is important to have new leadership to guide it. I look forward to working with the President’s choice for our next Defense Secretary, Robert Gates, should he be confirmed by the Senate.

“As Defense Secretary for President Ford and now for the current Administration, Donald Rumsfeld led the Pentagon through some of its darkest hours, after the fall of Saigon in 1975, and through the 9/11 attacks in 2001. For his long service to our country, the Secretary has my respect and thanks.”
