Congressman Dent praises UN Resolution against
North Korea, calls on nations to enforce sanctions
U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent (PA-15) applauded the United Nations Security
Council’s unanimous vote to impose sanctions on the Democratic People’s
Republic Of Korea (the DPRK or North Korea) resulting from its alleged
testing of nuclear devices last week.
Although he had hoped for some stronger measures, Congressman Dent called
the sanctions “a good first step” to containing the dangerous ambitions of
North Korea’s dictator, Kim Jung Il.
The Congressman issued the following statement:
“In order to help keep nuclear technology and materials out of the hands of
terrorists and rogue nations, it is important that the United States work in
concert with other nations and multi-national organizations.
“The fact that the Security Council, which includes traditional DPRK allies
such as China and Russia, was able to reach a unanimous agreement, is an
important first step toward controlling North Korea’s activities. This is a
country that must be held to account to the world community.
“The fact that the North Korean ambassador left the chamber subsequent to
the Council’s vote reveals the contempt that Kim Jung Il and the DPRK have
for regional stability and, in truth, for world peace in general.
Now this resolution must be followed with action. All countries must observe
the worldwide trading bans placed on North Korea and inspect all goods bound
for or emanating from the DPRK.”
