Committee to Hold Hearing On Gasoline Prices and Supply
WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, chairman of the House
Energy and Commerce Committee, has scheduled a full committee, two-part hearing
for Wednesday, May 10 and Thursday, May 11 at 10 a.m. in room 2123 of the
Rayburn House Office Building entitled, “Gasoline: Supply, Price, and
Specifications.”
The hearing will focus on various aspects of the regulation, production and
distribution of gasoline.
Certain areas of the country use specialty fuels, commonly referred to as
boutique fuels, to meet Clean Air Act goals. However, these fuels are less
interchangeable, sometimes resulting in spot shortages and price spikes.
In addition, the country is currently undergoing two fuel transitions. One
transition is the move from MTBE to ethanol, which brings with it changes to the
distribution delivery system for gasoline. For example, ethanol cannot be
delivered by pipeline because of its chemical nature. The second transition is
the yearly changeover from winter fuel to summer fuel.
