Homeland Security

$3,185,174 in federal grants from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for fiscal years 2004 and 2005, awards made possible by the FIRE Act of 2000, a law authored by Senator Dodd that gives local fire departments the ability to purchase new equipment, hire new personnel, and initiate education and training programs.

Economic Development

$150,000 in FY 2005 to assist with revitalization efforts taking place along Norwich Harbor.

Transportation

$57,500,000 in FY 2005 for improvements to the I-95 corridor in Connecticut. This funding will be used by the Connecticut Department of Transportation for projects such as the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge in New Haven, widening I-95 between Branford and North Stonington, and safety improvements in Fairfield County.

$17,400,000 since FY 2004 for the completion of the Route 11 expressway between Salem and Waterford.

$3,000,000 in FY 2004 for the Connecticut Department of Transportation to purchase new buses for use statewide.

$2,215,000 in FY 2005 for the Southeast Area Transit District to begin planning for bus rapid transit service between Bradley International Airport, Norwich, New London and area attractions.

$1,625,000 since FY 2005 for the Connecticut Department of Transportation to make necessary safety improvements to Route 82 in Norwich.

$910,000 in FY 2005 for improvements to recreational trails in Groton.

$500,000 in FY 2006 for structural improvements to the Cross Sound Ferry Terminal in New London.

$500,000 in FY 2006 for a study that will recommend traffic and safety improvements to the Route 27 corridor between Interstate 95 and Route 1 in Mystic.

$240,000 in FY 2005 for safety improvements to the Route 78 bridge connecting Stonington, Connecticut, and Westerly, Rhode Island.

Education

$1,000,000 in FY 2005 for Mystic Seaport, the Museum of America and the Sea, to renovate science laboratories used by the Mystic Seaport-Williams College academic collaboration.

$800,000 since FY 2004 for the Connecticut State University Teacher Training Initiative. This effort involves training future teachers who will work in Connecticut public school systems. The goal is to reduce an expected shortage of teachers in the coming years.

$100,000 in FY 2004 for Mystic Seaport, the Museum of America and the Sea, to place its Research Library collection online.

Social Services

$400,000 in FY 2005 for the Connecticut Council of Family Service Agencies’ Employment Success Program, a statewide initiative that works in 90 locations with low-income Temporary Family Assistance (TFA) recipients to find sustainable and permanent employment in the Connecticut job market.

Law Enforcement

$1,000,000 in FY 2005 for the Connecticut State Police to upgrade communications and criminal tracking technology that can be used in conjunction with municipal police department resources.

Environment

$2,300,000 since FY 2004 for conservation activities in Long Island Sound as authorized by the Long Island Sound Restoration Act of 2000.

$1,650,000 since FY 2004 for conservation and public educational awareness activities associated with the Quinebaug-Shetucket National Heritage Corridor.

$1,200,000 since FY 2004 for the University of Connecticut to monitor the health of Connecticut’s coast along Long Island Sound.

$870,000 in FY 2006 for the Town of East Lyme to acquire 127 acres of land as part of the Oswegatchie Hills Conservation Project.

$750,000 since FY 2004 for the Army Corps of Engineers to undertake routine conservation activities in Long Island Sound.
