NELSON STATEMENT ON THE GROUNDBREAKING OF THE MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. NATIONAL MEMORIAL

Nebraska’s Senator Ben Nelson today released the following statement on the groundbreaking of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial.

“A monument to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is a fitting tribute to the leader of the civil rights movement because it recognizes the non-violent struggle that forever transformed our country, but it is long overdue.

More than 40 years have passed since Dr. King shared his dream of hope, freedom, equality, and justice for all. Now, a memorial, not far from where Dr. King delivered his famous “Dream” speech in 1963, will provide visitors with the opportunity to honor his legacy that all Americans deserve to be treated with dignity.

As a country, we have made tremendous progress in the battle for equality but there is still much to be done. The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial will remind us all that together we can transform Dr. King’s dreams into a reality.”
