08/22/06 - Rep. Culberson on science, nanotech and stem cells |
Houston Chronicle by Eric Berger http://blogs.chron.com/sciguy/archives/2006/08/rep_culberson_o.html August 22, 2006
Psssst! Here's a secret: John Culberson is something of a geek. In his spare time he says he reads scientific journals, like Science and Nature, as well as popular science magazines.
Along with Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, he's been a champion of nanotechnology, especially for greater Houston. And if you listen to the following podcast, it's quite clear his interest is sincere. He gives a great description of the nanoshell work being done by Rice University's Naomi Halas and Jennifer West. I had the opportunity to visit with him recently about his interest in science, and I recorded the conversation.
During the 20-minute discussion I also ask Culberson, whose Congressional district includes Rice, the University of Houston and the Texas Medical Center, why he is vastly more supportive of nanotechnology than embryonic stem cell research, which the medical center would like to do more of.
