Internship Information

Washington, DC Summer Internship
Washington, DC Internship (fall & spring semesters)
Senate Foreign Relations Committee Intership (fall & spring semesters)
Indianapolis Internship (fall, spring & summer)

Thank you for your interest in internship programs in my Washington, D.C. offices and Indianapolis office. Those students interested in a summer internship in Washington, DC will intern in both my Washington, DC office and my Senate Foreign Relations Committee office. Students interested in an internship during the fall and spring semesters may intern separately for my Washington, DC office or for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. My Indianapolis office accepts students for internships all year long.

Interns are valued members of my staff. The assignments you are asked to complete are helpful in contributing to the efficiency of office operations. Tasks vary among internships, but often include drafting letters in response to constituent requests, researching legislation or proposed initiatives, attending committee hearings, leading tours of the Capitol building, and completing various administrative tasks. Students leave their internship with a solid understanding of operations in a Senate office.

Interns in my Washington, DC office are placed on a rotating schedule to work in the administrative, press, correspondence, and legislative sections of my office. Interns in my Indianapolis office assist with constituent casework and the other tasks necessary to provide Senatorial service to Hoosiers. Interns for the Foreign Relations Committee assist my staff with research on a variety of current issues of a global scale.

Interns also have the opportunity to attend speeches given by Senators, Representatives, administration officials and other distinguished visitors. Interns may have the chance to take part in special activities, too.

Eligibility

The ideal student will have a minimum grade point average of 3.0, be a college sophomore or junior, and have an interest in politics. Students from all academic disciplines who are interested in public policy, politics and foreign relations are welcome to apply.

Housing

Interns will be responsible for making housing arrangements in the Washington, D.C. area. My staff, however, can provide a list of reasonably priced housing and also website addresses where housing leads are posted. For summer interns, it is suggested to make housing arrangements as soon as possible.
